A performance meditation on time, place and the body. How do we meet and come to know each other at a distance? In these anxious and unsettled times, bodies matter. Collective Gestures / Collapsing Distances is a distributed performance taking place between Makassar (Sulawesi) and Gadigal Lands (NSW, Australia). Blending live motion capture data performed in Sydney by Victoria Chiu simultaneously with a performance by Rianto accompanied by live musicians and a performance text by Carol Brown. The motion captured dancer becomes the interface between places, improvising her responses to the performers in Makassar. Resisting the tyranny of distance this performance is always almost somewhere. As a choreo-sonic event it interweaves sounds, gestures and spaces speaking to a posthuman condition that is alert to how the ‘other’ speaks through us. Present but passing through in all directions in a convergence of human and more than human, the dancers’ gestures collect durationally into a tapestry of traces that audience encounter. The sensuous address of live performance unfolds through micro exchanges of unruly improvisation.
