Shooting and editing film to successfully capture another artist's creative conception and voice is a very particular collaborative endeavour. Finding myself unexpectedly invited to collaborate on the creation of an installation work, with and for, the celebrated interdisciplinary artist, Destiny Deacon, was, primarily, an adventure in creative humility. I came away from the collaboration feeling as though I had attended a master class in learning through listening and doing. A Seat at the Table, as a finished work and as an experience in making, shifted something deep in my understanding of art making. The experience of lighting, shooting and editing the super-8 film for Deacon insisted i ask, does deep creative deference grow ones own artistic capacity? Could active artistic submission and creative humility be the super food of collaboration?
