The ensemble performs regularly as part of Keller’s Monday night series at the Jazzlab (Brunswick, Melbourne). They perform compositions by Keller, reimagined for the unusual line-up of piano, accordion, trombone, alto saxophone. Incorporating high levels of improvisation, the ensemble focusses on simplicity and nuance as a method for developing musical material. The fluid approach to roles of the four instruments extend beyond the historic norm, with all four instruments equally capable of fulfilling melodic, harmonic, rhythmic, soloistic and accompanying roles. The accompaniment roles, predominantly shared by accordion and piano, are spontaneously devised, with a focus on the special qualities of register, rhythmic intensity, density, and vertical versus horizontal approaches, as a way of ensuring each instrumental voice has the opportunity to add meaningful contributions that may affect and direct the course of the music.

Research Statement

PATSy is a quartet devised and led by Andrea Keller. Named for Piano, Alto, Trombone, Squeezebox, the drummer-less and bass-less ensemble features established musicians Steven Grant (accordion) & Andrea Keller (piano) at the core, with the innovation of rising stars Flora Carbo (alto saxophone) & Callum Mintzis (trombone) interweaving and colouring the music from fresh perspectives. The ensemble performs regularly as part of Keller’s Monday night series at the Jazzlab (Brunswick, Melbourne). They perform compositions by Keller, reimagined for the unusual line-up of piano, accordion, trombone, alto saxophone. PATSy recorded their debut album live at the Jazzlab on July 12 (between lockdowns 4 & 5) & August 2 (between lockdowns 5 & 6) 2021. The live recording, released in March 2022, features seven tracks composed and arranged by Andrea Keller.
