Fierce and provocative, Emilia is the perfect mix of laughter and fury – a rollicking ride that takes its audiences on an exuberant and moving journey though love, loss, identity, ambition, power, rebellion and what it is to be a woman in a man's world. Who was Emilia? Was she the "Dark Lady" of Shakespeare's sonnets? With a cast of 13 incredible women who collectively embody diversity rarely seen on our stages – Emilia is a riotous ride that leaves audiences breathless. First commissioned by Shakespeare's Globe, Emilia then transferred to the West End, becoming the hottest ticket in London. Hailed by British Theatre as "an extraordinary, era defining play" this powerful story promises to be the theatrical event of 2022.

Research Statement

The work aims to reclaim the silenced voice of Emilia Bassano - who has been remembered by historians as a whore or erased altogether, when in fact she played a significant role in Shakespearean England. The work exposes and challenges contemporary assumptions of truth relating to our past. One of the largest cast and crew made up entirely of women and non-binary people on a production in the history of Australian live performance; Maza (in character) directly questions the audience's complicity and involvement in the story presented on stage, challenging them to question their own belief systems; The set design explored how the visual elements of storytelling could conceptually support the notions of exposing history. - Emilia is a triple Olivier Award-winning play - A "fire-cracker production" with "a clever mix of history and revolution" (The Times) - Conflicting reviews in Australian media attest to the challenging nature of the show, the primary conflict residing in each individual reviewer's grappling with the explicit feminist backbone of the show – it provoked much critical discourse, see: https://www.theguardian.com/stage/2022/nov/24/emilia-review-a-feminist-take-on-the-life-of-shakespeares-dark-lady https://www.artshub.com.au/news/reviews/theatre-review-emilia-2593741/ http://www.keithgow.com/2022/11/review-emilia-by-morgan-lloyd-malcolm.html https://www.theatretravels.org/post/review-emilia-at-arts-centre-melbourne https://theblurb.com.au/wp/emilia/
