The remarkable tale of a mass whale rescue in a remote corner of lutruwita / Tasmania. Sitting between rainforest, sand dunes, and the vast expanse of the Indian Ocean lies the old port town of Strahan. With its strange tides, and stranger tidings; a place where the roar of an engine meets the deafening silence of ancient trees; a place where fishermen haul their catch from water stained black by button grass, a place where coastal winds race across a fog-laced harbour towards passing travellers. All was peaceful here… until unexpected visitors arrived at Hells Gates.

Research Statement
A new Australian play, Hells Gates retells the story of a tiny community dealing with over 500 stranded pilot whales in Tasmania in 2020. The play uses a real-life event to question our relationship to the climate and our natural world.
The set design explored potential for large-scale visual impact using minimal new materials, re-purposing decommissioned billboard skins headed for landfill to create an abstract world hinting at the detritus of humanity. This transformed existing design methodologies, demonstrating audiences are willing to accept repurposed materials as representations of new ideas when the material is presented in new or unexpected ways.
This production was supported by Geelong Arts Centre's Creative Engine grant program, an initiative of GAC's commitment to developing significant new work with a strong connection to the Greater Geelong region.
Partly due to this support an experienced cast was secured, including Matu Ngaropo (George Washington in Hamilton) Louise Siversen (Heartbreak Choir, House Husbands, Prisoner) and Natalie O'Donnell (Come From Away, Next to Normal), accompanied by a live musical soundscape from celebrated violinist, Xani Kolac.
Hells Gates was selected to be the first play to perform in GAC's newly constructed theatre (although delays to its completion meant it had to be moved to a different venue).
It is difficult to attract reviewers to Geelong, but those few who attended connected deeply with the world the actors and Xani created.
