Key Intersections of Cite – Sight – Site (Integrated knowledge, creativity, and action)
Site–Sight–Cite visualises the entangled relationship between integrated knowledge, creativity, and action in contemporary art and design-based education. Developed over years of inquiry and praxis, this conceptual diagram is grounded in Kathryn Coleman’s a/r/tographic methodology, where ‘citing’ theory, ‘sighting’ the world, and ‘situating’ oneself within place, practice, and community intersect. The three interlocking circles reflect the dynamic interplay between research, pedagogy, and artistic practice, proposing a framework for engaging critically and creatively with the world through art and design-based education. This visualisation has been developed for Radical Residencies for Anthropogenic Times a chapter with Dr Sarah Healy and doctoral researcher Cassandra Truong as we have considered how to best see the triadic movements of artist-researcher-teachers with the ‘cite-sight-site’ (Coleman, 2021) in relation to knowing (theoria), doing (praxis), and making (poesis) (See Irwin, 2017) and the spaces and places in which it is practicing.
