Research Statement
A two-person exhibition of artist Maria Kozic and Darren Sylvester at Neon Parc, Melbourne. A curated selection of photographic, painted and sculptural works, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to compare and contrast each artists’ methodology, as their works each separately navigate ideas of the Self, transformation and popular culture. The combination can be seen as two artists working in similar fields over two generations.
Maria Kozic is one of Australia's greatest artists and feminist icon. Currently living in New York, this was her first major exhibition in Australia over a decade. Made possible by Neon parc gallery who found between the two artists was a great synchronicity in themes and imagery. The combination of works could be seen as an Australian aesthetic on the subjects of pop culture and horror that exists over two generations of artists.
This was major exhibition for both artists, in particular by showcasing both artists and similarities, Kozic was introduced back into Australian contemporary art and was curated later that year into a new exhibition at ACCA (Australian Centre for Contemporary Art).
