Research Statement

The field is music performance: the realisation of chamber music which features the clarinet. The research question is: Is it possible to add a unique layer of musical expression to a new notated score through performer interactions and workshops? What effect does my method of interpretation have on the final performance outcome? The research contribution is the realisation of Bartok's Contrasts, Mozart's Kegelstatt Trio, Brahms Clarinet Quintet, Weber's Clarinet Quintet and Thomas Ades' Alchymia. The innovation involves my unique artistic interpretation and use of sound colours to add a new dimension of expression to the works beyond the noted score. The interactions between performers that are created as a result of the festival environment lead to new and unique performances of these existing works. The Martinborough Music Festival is a highly regarded chamber music festival in New Zealand. The festival brings together a roster of the worlds leading musicians from Australia, New Zealand and Europe. All of the performances were recorded for national broadcast on Radio New Zealand.
