Research Statement
Research field: classical chamber music (vocal).
This research investigated cross-language principles of lyric diction. The Melofonetica method (dalle Fratte, 2023) is a systematic approach to Italian lyric diction that focuses on the timing of consonants. The researcher, who is a trained teacher of the method, theorised that some principles of the method could be applied to German lyric diction.
This is the first-known application of the Melofonetica method to German-language repertoire. The purpose of identifying cross-language principles is that from 2026, lyric diction will be taught at the University of Melbourne in a revised condensed format (2 languages per semester instead of one). As the lecturer of the subject, it is imperative that the researcher can explain how the languages taught compare and contrast in respect to lyric diction. Through this research, the researcher was able to identify which principles of Melofonetica apply to German repertoire and which do not. By trialing this in duet repertoire, the researcher also experienced explaining the principles to another singer. The recording of the performance revealed that the timing of consonants between the researcher and other singer well synchronised and the German text sounded clear and idiomatic.
