Mothermorphosis was an original creative work created by writer/performer Liz Sktich exploring the changes and surprises that one encounters during pregnancy, birth and motherhood. With direction by Maude Davey. It had a sell out season at the Melbourne Fringe Festival in 2018 and received glowing reviews in the Age/Sydney Morning Herald. Cameron Woodhead in The Age wrote: “You couldn’t ask for a show that channels the spirit of La Mama with more irreverence and passion” The work was inspired by Kafka’s Metamorphosis, and Skitch/Davey created an innovative work that combined multiple comic traditions – clown, character comedy, satire, the grotesque and cabaret. I worked on the show as a Movement Advisor and worked in creative development and rehearsal with Skitch to refine the characters and comic states that she was exploring. I worked closely with Skitch to create contrasting characters, tones and states that would let her explore the various and varied aspects of pregnancy and motherhood. I used work from the Lecoq pedagogy to detail Skitch’s work physically – using mime training, the embodiment of elements and materials, and of course, clown techniques.
