Research Statement
The field is music performance: the realisation of Gottwald and Salamon's arrangement of Mozart's Clarinet Concerto for clarinet and strings, performed without conductor with the Melbourne Chamber Orchestra. Is it possible to add a unique layer of musical expression to a new notated score through performer/ensemble interactions? What effect does my method of interpretation have on the final performance outcome?
The innovation involves my unique artistic interpretation and use of sound colours to add a new dimension of expression to the works beyond the noted score. I also experimented with cadenza's and ornaments to create a new impression of the work influenced by the unique interactions between soloist and ensemble. This interaction created a new version of the work not previously experienced.
The live performances were held in the Melbourne Recital Centre. The second performance was recorded for national radio broadcast on ABC Classic. (25/3/2025)
The performances also received 3 critical reviews including: “Not a soul in the audience dared rustle a thread of clothing or scarcely draw breath, so compelling and precise was Griffiths’ performance.’ Beat (March 2025)
