Research Statement
Sandwich Boards continues research into the current condition of the photographic within contemporary art. Building on the question “How is desire manifest within the photographic object?” It extends on the contemporary conversation on the photographic led by the question “What is a photograph?”
Sandwich Boards is comprised of five double sided works each cut and assembled to create an unresolved image surface. Mimicking the most basic language of desire – direct street marketing – each work is ‘images built from images’ devoid of narrative. Constructed to reflect on the way desires are made in popular visual culture and how these desires pull us through life.
This work was included in the two person – with Izabela Pluta - exhibition Hollow held at the Museum of Australian Photography, Australia’s leading contemporary art gallery focussing on photographic practice. The research was supported through the publishing of a significant catalogue. Hollow, had over 7000 visitors, was supported with a public program of artists talks and education workshops. The works comprising Sandwich boards were all acquired and entered into the MAPh collection. This is the most significant collection of Australian artists using the photographic medium in the country.
