In this project as a performing practitioner, Ross Hannaford explored the intersection of classical vocal technique and character acting in an opera company's production of a musical, Sweeney Todd. He encountered a particular challenge in this context, when striving to overcome the obstacles and reconcile the demands of classical vocal production being in tension with the acting requirements of a musical. He was striving to fulfil the complex demands of the director's vision, the musical director's vision and the opera company, whilst aiming to interpret his role. This negotiation was investigated in playing the role of Tobias Ragg, a character experiencing destitution, hardship, and abuse. Tobias' ambiguous age and background in conjunction with his potent set of experiences presented an opportunity for a flexible approach to the operatic vocal production which prioritises visceral expression over traditional sound qualities typically applied in an opera company. Ross simultaneously explored the complexities of the character using acting techniques whilst he attempted to deliver the vocal interpretation required. This representation is particularly important in opera companies and normalises an acting driven approach as well as a diverse vocal landscape within the medium. As a performing practitioner, Ross was aiming to encourage the audience to empathise with and relate to the character of Tobias Ragg. In doing so, he was contributing to and thereby enhancing the overall impact of the operatic performances within Sweeney Todd. His performance was endeavouring to make his character more relatable and immersive for contemporary audiences whilst maintaining a connection to classical vocal traditions. His work in this production has garnered recognition and acclaim within the performing arts community and resulted in a Greenroom Award nomination.
