Research Statement

This project investigates merging live performance with narrative fiction film, expanding the realist form. It mediates live performances into film to engage broader audiences, examining realist emotion appearance and directorial approaches for capturing intimate responses. The researcher produced, wrote and directed the narrative feature film The Five Provocations in response to the research on the mediation of live performance, improvisation as a screenwriting tool and gender disparity in screen media. The work specifically investigates concepts of performance of gender and sexuality, identity and experience through narrative themes of loss and change. The research significance lies in presenting an alternative film production model where performance informs the narrative rather than a traditional screenplay-driven approach. Indicators of the film's value include availability on SVOD & VOD platforms globally, positive critical reviews, academic journal features, and prestigious festival selections, including world premieres and award nominations.
