Following the success of Transients Volume 1 (released May 3, 2019), which won the Music Victoria Award for Best Jazz Album 2019, and received nominations at the 2019 ARIA Awards, and the Australian Music Prize, I released Transients Volume 2. The music from both albums was recorded over 2 days in October 2018 at Melbourne’s iconic Allan Eaton Studio in St Kilda and features a team of stellar musicians, who perform regularly with me as part of my Transients series of trios (formed in January 2016).

Research Statement

In the field of music, jazz and improvisation, the focus of Transients (a series of trios with differing instrumentation and personnel) has been dedicated to a collective approach to music making with a heavy focus on the development of an Australian jazz repertoire, creating a set of locally familiar Australian standards. Another focus is the creation of networks and working collaborations between emerging and established musicians through its showcasing of an extensive pool of creative Melbourne musicians. In 2019 Transients performed weekly at Uptown Jazz Café, as well as two performances at the MRC Salon, one for the Melbourne International Jazz Festival and one at Four Winds for Zephyr's Jazz (NSW). The research conducted through the continuing development of Transients has been responsible for significant insights into the development of a collective sound, and differing approaches to group interaction and ensemble playing. In instances where repertoire is shared between trios, the process of adapting material to different instrumental groupings and players has provided valuable compositional and arranging insights. Transients Volume 1 (released May 3, 2019), won the Music Victoria Award for Best Jazz Album 2019, and received nominations at the 2019 ARIA Awards, and the Australian Music Prize. Both volumes of the Transients album were recorded at the same 2-day session in October 2018, and feature nine local jazz musicians. Transients Volume 2 is already garnering positive attention through feedback, reviews and radio play, including being named album of the week in the AGE November 29, 2019.
