Transients Volume 4: For Joy

This item contains files with download restrictions
The objective of Transients Volume 3: For Sorrow & Transients Volume 4: For Joy is to document the compositions and collaborations created by Keller predominantly between 2020 – 2024. These album releases mark her twenty-fourth & twenty-fifth albums as leader. The two albums feature her original compositions performed by ten of Melbourne’s leading voices in the world of jazz and improvisation. Andrea began Transients in January 2016, following the passing of treasured mentor Allan Browne. The ever-evolving series of trios (+ additions), celebrate and nurture collaborative music making and improvisation, and bring together some of Australia’s most unique and innovative voices in jazz. Following the success of Transients Volume 1 & 2, both released in 2019 (Vol 1 awarded the 2019 Music Victoria Award for Best Jazz Album and nominated for an ARIA for Best Jazz Album 2019), the music for Transients Volume 3 & 4 was recorded over two days in January 2024 at Head Gap Studio, Preston. The recordings showcase an extensive pool of creative Melbourne musicians: Jenny Barnes – voice, Angela Davis – saxophone, Niran Dasika – trumpet, Theo Carbo – guitar, Stephen Magnusson – guitar, Sam Anning – bass, Ben Vanderwal – drums, Kyrie Anderson – drums, and Joe Talia – drums, alongside Andrea Keller – piano. Transients Volume 3: For Sorrow & Transients Volume 4: For Joy are available in digital and limited-edition CDs and were released on November 22, 2024.

Research Statement

Transients Volume 3: For Sorrow & Transients Volume 4: For Joy documents the compositions and collaborations created by Keller predominantly between 2020 – 2024. These albums mark her twenty-fourth & twenty-fifth albums as leader, bringing together some of Australia’s most unique and innovative voices in jazz. The two albums feature Keller’s original compositions performed by ten of Melbourne’s leading voices in the world of jazz and improvisation. Of the 16 tracks released, 12 are previously unreleased. The recordings showcase an extensive pool of creative Melbourne musicians: Jenny Barnes – voice, Angela Davis – saxophone, Niran Dasika – trumpet, Theo Carbo – guitar, Stephen Magnusson – guitar, Sam Anning – bass, Ben Vanderwal – drums, Kyrie Anderson – drums, and Joe Talia – drums, alongside Andrea Keller – piano. Through the process of creating the two albums I collaborated with musicians in Melbourne, some of whom are long-term collaborators and others newer. Some of the ensembles are well established, while other combinations are much more recent, with some having been put together specifically for the recording. Four of the compositions were written in the days just prior to the studio sessions and as such, were being developed in the studio. The remaining older compositions were well rehearsed and work shopped prior to the recording. The albums were launched as part of the Melbourne Women's International Jazz Festival on December 9th, 2024. No reviews yet
