A performance meditation on time, place and the body. How do we meet and come to know each other at a distance? In these anxious and unsettled times, bodies matter. Collective Gestures / Collapsing Distances is a distributed performance taking place between Banyumas (Central Java) and Gadigal Lands (NSW, Australia). Blending live motion capture data performed live in Sydney with a dance performance, broadcast sound and vocals from Indonesia. The solo motion capture dancer becomes the interface between places, improvising her responses to the performers in Banyumas. Resisting the tyranny of distance this performance is always almost somewhere. In this networked choreo-sonic event, an interweaving of sounds, gestures and spaces speaks to a posthuman agency that is alert to how the ‘other’ speaks through us. Present but passing through in all directions in a convergence of human and more than human, the dancers’ gestures collect durationally into a tapestry of traces that audience encounter. The sensuous address of live performance unfolds through micro exchanges of unruly improvisation.
