This short was part of an exhibit called “Encounters with the Real World: Research informed media to change hearts and minds" at the MSDx exhibition at the Faculty of Architecture, Building and Planning in November 2024. The audio visual exhibit as a whole foregrounded environmental advocacy work that I undertake outside of my research or professional work but which uses techniques developed in both.

The presentation style piece explores the rationale for the adoption of a Nature Strip Planting Guidelines in my local council area, Nillumbik Shire. It was based on social media posts which I made as a local advocate during the second half of 2024.

The piece tells of two Melbourne councils that have successfully adopted Nature Strip Guidelines, the City of Port Phillip, and Moonee Valley City Council. Both councils adopted Guidelines as an approach to benefit local biodiversity and climate, as well as building community and enhancing human experience. It also touches on the personal story of my experience inadvertently failing to obtain a permit, before I undertook nature strip planting, and falling foul of the 'General Local Law'.

The media includes video of birds in the landscape in this space around the nature strip of my Green Wedge farm [Doreen, Nillumbik, Wurundjeri Country], as well as stills showing the list of 70 species recorded in the immediate local area by a volunteer during 'Birds on Farms' seasonal surveys.

The piece relates strongly to other pieces shared on my Figshare repository including 'Biodiversity Strategies', https://figshare.unimelb.edu.au/articles/media/Biodiversity_Strategies/28232948 [media format] OR https://figshare.unimelb.edu.au/articles/presentation/Biodiversity_Strategies_powerpoint_presentation/28233002 [editable powerpoint format].

It also relates to the concepts discussed in the 'Playbook for Urban Biodiversity' produced by the Melbourne Centre for Cities at the University of Melbourne. https://figshare.unimelb.edu.au/articles/report/Playbook_for_Urban_Biodiversity/24558505?file=45271114

This piece was made for the exhibition within Microsoft Powerpoint, and exported to MP4 format.
