Particle Motion through TURBO, a Large Momentum Acceptance Demonstrator Beamline
An animation showing modelling of the motion of particles through the first version of the TURBO beamline. The different colours represent different energy beams (green particles on the far right are 0.5MeV, red particles on the far left are 3.0MeV). The arrays of rectangular blocks around the particle beams are magnets, which are used for beam steering and focusing.
This work is part of the Technology for Ultra Rapid Beam Operation (TURBO) Project, which aims to improve the quality of charged particle therapy for cancer treatment through the design and construction of a large momentum acceptance beamline. A beam delivery system with a large momentum acceptance would be able to rapidly switch beam energies, removing a bottleneck that currently limits the efficacy of cancer treatment with protons and other ions.
