Research Statement

This project uses documentary filmmaking techniques and co-creation methodologies to explore alternative futures with a small group of young women of South Sudanese descent. The resulting output is Set the Tone, an on-line talk show conceived by Adier Maluk, Angeth Malual, Adior Deng & Yar Biar – young Australian women of South Sudanese descent driven to create a platform that speaks to them and their peers. Working as a direct intervention in the near future, Set the Tone creates a platform for young women from the African diaspora to deep dive into the issues that matter to them and challenge assumptions from both within and outside their communities. The project is a collaboration between researchers at University of Melbourne (UOM), Kids Own Publishing & Signal. Launched on-line and by the Lord Mayor of Melbourne at screening event at UOM Southbank campus in September 2019, it then went to on to screen as part of the MPavillion program in December of that year. As a result of the project the creators have been invited to speak on ABC national radio, and ABC TV The Drum, local radio 3RRR & 3CR and in various on-line & print publications.
