Memory Flower is an audiovisual work that weaves together culture, history, and urban ecology to bridge the past and present in the evolving narratives of contemporary Singapore. The work incorporates images and sounds captured from key cultural and historical sites, such as the Peranakan Museum, the Asian Civilisations Museum, and Singapore’s last Kampong. These elements are interspersed with pulsating signals and vibrant data points of sound and colour, creating a multi-layered narrative. This work continues the collaborative research trajectory of Anthony Lyons (images and sound) and Paul Fletcher (animation), who explore the interplay of data signals, cultural memory, and technological layering in urban contexts. Memory Flower introduces new methodologies for audiovisual storytelling that connect past and present through urban ecologies. The work employs innovative techniques such as the superimposition of photographic imagery and site-specific field recordings with animation, combining cultural and historical layers from Singaporean heritage sites. Communication signals and audio static are interwoven throughout, evoking the density and saturation of stimuli in contemporary urban environments. This approach sonifies and visualises hidden networks of signals that shape the understanding of how urban landscapes are constructed. Additionally, by drawing inspiration from heritage sites like the Peranakan Museum, the Asian Civilisations Museum, and the last Kampong, the work juxtaposes traditional urban life against modernity, offering poignant reflections on the resonance of the past and its influence on future urban development.

The work was featured in the exhibition Cultural Resonance: Crafting Future Narratives and Soundscapes at Singapore’s On-Air Gallery, at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition attracted significant attendance and received wide publicity, underscoring its cultural relevance. Memory Flower contributes to the discourse on how urban identities are shaped by the interplay of historical memory and future imaginings. By examining urban environments as intricate tapestries of historical and contemporary forces, the work enhances our understanding of cultural resonance within complex urban ecologies.
