Autophagy is a cell clean-up and recycling pathway that helps maintains cell health. In ageing or disease, this clean-up pathway is impaired. We think that this failure in autophagy may also be contributing to nerve cell death in eyes affected by glaucoma. As part of my PhD project, I also describe a mouse model where we can visualise the autophagy pathway in living eyes, allowing us to track this clean-up process in eyes after glaucoma-like injury.
