This report has explored the current limitations of vocabulary mapping within the Australian healthcare system and outlined a path toward improvement. The primary recommendation is to prioritise a staged approach that focuses on establishing governance mechanisms, leveraging metadata to enhance trust and findability, and strategically integrating AI technologies as they mature. By doing so, the Australian healthcare community can build a more efficient and effective system for managing vocabularies and mappings. This collaborative effort will not only improve data discoverability and integration but also advance research and clinical systems, enabling more comprehensive and reliable health data analysis. The successful implementation of these recommendations depends on continued community engagement and a commitment to open-source solutions that prioritise interoperability and accessibility. The aspiration is that the developed ecosystem would be applicable beyond the health domain.
