Radical Residencies for Anthropogenic Times presented at A Critical Turn in Teacher Residencies: Dreaming New Ways Forward in School, University, and Community Entanglements Georgia State University, March 1-2, 2024
Abstract
In our highly politicised landscape of initial teacher education where everyone has an opinion – because we’ve all been to school – SWISP Lab advocates for a radical rethinking of art teacher residencies for Anthropogenic Times. Moving beyond traditional paradigms, we integrate a/r/tographic practices, emphasising living inquiry and challenging conventional dualistic ontologies. SWISP Lab's radical A/R/T residencies explore the intersections of human-land-technology relations deeply situated in local communities. Our onto-epistemic approach urges educators to consider the diverse voices, histories, and cultures present (or absent) in art education. Recognising the Anthropocene's implications, not merely as a climatic concern but as a testament to pervasive gendered, racialised, and colonial extractions, our residencies venture outside conventional 'school' settings. We introduce speculative curriculums addressing the multifaceted crises of today, from gender violence to climate change. Drawing inspiration from justice-oriented spaces, we integrate community-relevant issues into teacher ‘training’, aiming for pluriversal, relation-centric metho-pedagogies for anthropogenic times.
