Measuring the Australian Night Time Economy 2024

This analysis measures the size of the Australian Night Time Economy (NTE), as defined as economic activity occurring between 6pm and 6am. It is split into Core, Non-Core and Supply sectors with a focus on the Core NTE comprising food, drink and leisure & entertainment (consumption) businesses.

This report provides detailed economic performance data for the latest financial year 2022-23. The report also includes data and maps relating to opening hours and clustering of businesses, using a snapshot of business activity data from July 2024. Economic data has been prepared for 88 Australian cities.

Key insights from the report reveal that the number of Core NTE businesses stabilised during the 2022/23 period, with substantial growth in sales turnover, although this was matched by rising expenses. Employment within the Core NTE has nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels, now just 1 per cent below.
