Research Statement
50 Rules for Making Art was a knitted textile based installation that explored the historical tradition of 'rules' about art making by artist. Comprise of 50 'new rules' authored by me, the exhibition comprised 50 knitted panels with the personal rules inscribed. The exhibition explored a feminist community ethos around art making.
The exhibition contributed a personal, feminist vision of the 'rules' or expectations around art making and a long career in art. Featuring texts such as 'make art for yourself' 'have a family if you want to' 'find your own voice' the exhibition used knitting to inscribe personal narrative and self belief into art making process.
The major solo exhibition was mounted at Hugo Michell Gallery, a nationally respected commercial gallery showing cutting edge contemporary art.
