What comes to your mind on hearing the word 'relief'? In a language classroom, it would probably conjure images related to the alleviation of pain or need. In a Geography classroom however, the images are of mountains or maps with contours. The same word in different disciplines carries vastly different meanings because each discipline has its own way of thinking and communicating. It can be said that each discipline has its own distinctive language and therefore literacy demands can vary significantly across disciplines.
